May 21st 2010: Red Fish Blue Fish NEW Freshwater Section

Red Fish Blue Fish will be expanding our location during June of 2010. We will be taking over Dales Variety store for our new freshwater section which will be over 1,000 gallons. These tanks will house some "bread & butter", however we will be concentrating  on the "rare & unusual" freshwater fish. This will also make room for more supplies for freshwater and saltwater as well as aquariums and aquarium set ups.

Our new freshwater section will consist of over a dozen 75 gallon aquariums. With larger tanks we can house some of the "larger" species that would be hard to obtain in the Peterborough and surrounding areas. We will be carrying some unusual South American and Asian species and more.

Some items we will not be carrying in stock are "feeder goldfish". In my personal experience there is no need to feed "live fish" to other fish to keep them alive. We can show you other alternatives to feed your fish properly. There is very little nutritional value in feeder goldfish. It's really unnatural since Oscars and Piranha's do not find goldfish in their natural environment. Feeding live feeders will eventually bring disease to your fish (even if you quarantine it can still happen) and put fatty deposits on the liver causing a short life and can make your fish more aggressive than it needs to be. It's just simply inhumane.

We will not be selling goldfish for "Jack & Jill's" as we believe it's just inhumane for what happens to them. We will not be selling goldfish for a "goldfish bowl" for some of the same reasons. If you would like a fish for a bowl setting try a Betta.

In 2011 Canada will be setting bans or require CITES permits for certain freshwater species. There is no list out that I am aware of made to the public yet. This may be partially due to hobbyists releasing Oscars and Pacus and even Piranhas into Canada's freshwater lakes and river systems. I have had several phone calls from the MNR about identifying fish hobbyists have released into our lakes and rivers. Because of this, Red Fish Blue Fish is will not be carrying Oscars, Pacus and certain species of Piranhas.

Some of the different species that we are able to obtain and will carry in stock are some of the following:

  • Discus
  • Imported Freshwater Angelfish that actually live and are not inbred
  • Apistograma's
  • Rainbowfish
  • Killifish
  • Freshwater Puffers (Tasseled, Congo, Pignose etc..)
  • Catfish (Tigrinus, Jurense, Chaca Chaca and other rarities)
  • Arrowana ( Jardini, Platinum, Silver, Black and more)
  • Freshwater Shrimps (no feeders)
  • Freshwater Lobsters (Blue Cobalt etc..)
  • Rare Plecos (Zebra L-46 and others)

In time, this new space will also allow us to be more flexible ideas such as sharks and stingrays and some other ideas that we are considering. This will also give us more room to expand our saltwater "fish only" section.

This new section will be open July 1st 2010, if not sooner. To celebrate this expansion will will have a grand opening around this time. Once we get close to this date and have more details I will post any information on here while we are in progress.
